I do not understand why this software does not undergo the same type of verification procedures that are required in the aerospace industry. I have read about how much work goes into writing the specifications for spacecraft at NASA and the type of system crashes described in the article would be unacceptable for those real-time applications. I believe that regulation of these devices falls under the purview of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health. I think I will have to look more into this field. So far, I have found a book, "Medical Device Software: Verification, Validation, and Compliance", so there are people working on it.
